China Southern interested in Shenzhen majority stake

China Southern Airlines reportedly plans to purchase the 65% stake in neighboring Shenzhen Airlines formerly held by Li Zeyuan, who was arrested in November, in effort to strengthen its position in southern China.

According to local press reports, CZ already has spoken with authorities in Beijing regarding the potential stake purchase. CZ GM Tan Wangeng refused to comment, however, calling the situation "too sensitive."

Shenzhen said it has not had formal discussions regarding the stake with Guangzhou-based CZ. Shenzhen is one of China's most profitable airlines. It was CNY500 million ($73.1 million) in the black through the first 11 months of 2009 (ATWOnline, Dec. 24, 2009).

CZ has a branch company at Shenzhen Bao'an International that is the second-largest airline at the airport and commands a 30% share of passenger boardings. It signed a cooperation agreement with the Shenzhen municipal government last month outlining its plan to raise its market share to 50% in the next five years. According to the agreement, CZ aims to build the airport into a regional hub connecting China with nearby countries.

It has been widely speculated that Air China was planning a takeover of Shenzhen Airlines. It already holds 25% and has transferred at least two major executives to the carrier in recent months. Shenzhen VP Zhang Siping has reiterated several times that the municipal government intends to support the airline's status as an independent carrier. The government holds 10%.
